2024 plans!

This thought has always been in my mind every year as its winding down or starting up but I always get lost in the recipe and never get to the sauce….hahah…lame? I seem to get too wrapped up in the details of what do I exactly want to make? can I find the idea on pinterest? should I make a mood board? how do I make a moodboard? should I journal this or just keep it to myself? — I just get too deep into the planning, maybe because I’m afraid to begin. I always want to have my plan, planned perfectly so there are no hiccups along the way, and this prevents me from trying new things, experimenting, and having fun…this year will be different. Step one has already started…by writing this blog, out in the world for anyone or noone to read/see.

After watching Madison Lynn’s YouTube video on her “Fabric stash & 2024 sewing plans” (which coincidentally I always tend to mistake her for another creator named Sydney who I found on tiktok..?), a thought struck for about 5 minutes that in order for me to start I need to have a road map, something to look on to for guidance and perseverance. In the beginning of my sewing journey I decided that I wanted to learn how to make my own patterns, and create clothing on my own. As the years have gone on, this journey has been daunting and there have been a lot of downs more than ups, and it has prevented me from persevering; so… for 2024 I will go back to the basics, and use patterns created by individuals, or companies. This I hope, will serve me as a jumping off point where I don’t have to worry if the piece will come out right, but will allow me to focus on alterations and the freedom to add/remove elements that tailor to my liking and will allow me to learn new techniques!

Throughout the month of January, I have been returning to my old routine of visiting my favorite thrift store on saturdays, where I have made friends with two elderly women who volunteer! I go early in the morning after opening and spend about an hour looking at their large sewing/craft section. This shop gets tons of donations and they are a non-profit who donates their earnings back to the community such as women’s shelters, children’s services and many more! They have been a part of the community for almost 50 years and I can’t believe I have only known about them for a handful of those, but as I do my saturday routine, I have been focusing on finding new hobbies to try and new patterns to collect!

With all of this being said…let’s talk about all the amazing patterns I want to use this year!

* patterns are in no particular order.

#1: The Exact Jeans Fit of CALVIN KLEIN

About 2 years ago, I embarked on an idea of creating my own jeans pattern, so naturally I decided to buy denim fabric…unfortunately I never made them, and I think I lost the pattern I had started. So this will be the first pattern I create within the 2024 sewing road map. The pattern is for a size 10 (W: 27.5″, H: 37″, Thigh: 23.25″), I will create a twill to test the pattern as is and make my own adjustments to fit them to my body. I haven’t measured myself in a while so these pants might be a little too big or too small, we will find out 🙂

#2: English Smock

When I found this pattern, I knew I couldn’t pass it up! I have wanted to learn how to smock but never really gave it much more thought than that…doesn’t that sound like a trend with me :/ – nevertheless, I am excited to create more shirts and flowy dresses that include details to give it more of a pop! I think that depending on the method used for the smocking, I could sneak in some thread with a color to make the details really stand out and add some personality!

#3: Turkish Coat

From the drawing on the pattern, the coat didn’t strike me as anything marvelous but once I looked online, I could see the potential. The weather in Ks in winter can get pretty cold and though I have many coats, I feel like I can make room for one more! This pattern though, will most likely have to wait towards the end of the year October/November so I can get the satisfaction of wearing just as the cold weather is coming back.

#4: Misses’ Dress

I want to create this pattern for the summer! I believe its modest for my office job and paired with a light fabric could make a wonderful dress for those hot summer days! I also love that it is form-fitting around the waist and then very loose and flowy at the bottom!

#5: Misses’/Misses’ Petite Dress

This is another summer dress pattern that I would love to make. View C is the style I feel would look most flattering on me, and paired with a tight sheer top would help me wear it from spring to autumn!

#6: jordan cargo pants: view C

This is a pattern not for me obviously but for my husband. He is not someone who purchases many pieces of clothing and most times he only has 2 pairs of jeans at a time. He expressed that he prefers view C & A. I think these pants would look great in a dark color such as black, but it all comes down to his preference and fabric availability..

#7: Thalia Pants

I have had this pattern since I was living in California. I found this amazing second-hand shop in San Francisco named “ScarpSF”, which was essentially a warehouse filled with anything you could think of, and one of those things was cabinets full of sewing patterns that were 10c a piece. These pants offer an elegant and classic piece with some comfort, since the back waistband is elastic! I would love to make them in a neutral tone, or maybe go crazy with a bright color?

#8: PJ set: jordan

For christmas 2023, Jordan received a pair of pj’s from my mother; and to my surprise he ended up loving them way more than I thought. I have had this pattern for a long time in hopes to gift him a pair of pj’s and this year i’m making it my year! I will opt-in for the long sleeve button-down and the pants, as he is more likely to wear them during winter.

#9: LADIES raglan T-shirt

This is a pattern I have attempted at before but never succeeded because I wouldn’t take my time reading the instructions and ensuring there was a proper fit prior to sewing a final fitting. I had created a version previously and for the most part it looked great but turned out a tad to short on the arms and bottom. This time, I will give it a proper shot and I hope to make it a stable in my wardrobe.

#10: Lark Tee

This is another pattern that I have attempted many times but never gotten a good grasp on. With this pattern, I not only want to create beautifully crafted T-shirts but also hope to create sheer long-sleeve to wear of dresses or vests during cooler weather. With this pattern you also have the choice to miss and match the sleeves and necklines! So in total you can have up to 16 different shirts!!!

#11: pj set: Yelmy

I have been wanting to make pj’s for a while but each time that I think of doing it, I never have the fabric on hand or I have a perfect pair of pj’s and there would be no reason to create a new set…but summer is coming and I want to have something that’s lightweight and allows for movement as I toss around in my sleep. View D & E seem like a great option with view E being my top priority. I envision either a light soft satin or silk-like fabric.

#12: Bicycle Racing Shorts

This is a pattern that I recently just bought last weekend. Jordan and I love bicycling around town during the summer but I always find it uncomfortable when on long rides. I have looked into purchasing a pair from REI, but can never bring myself to pay the price…maybe by making it and spending way more, it will all seem worth it. I also purchased men’s and women’s bicycle racing jerseys and if all goes well with the pants, maybe i’ll sew the shirts too!

#13: Pinafore

Gathering fabric has now become my 13th reason and I have had this pattern for a while and cannot get myself to make it. I love the way the gingham fabric looks and would make a beautiful top, so we will give it a shot!

#15: Headscarf

A couple months after I shaved my head back in 2021? my hair was at a weird stage and since it was summer, I refused to wear a beanie, so I opted for the next best thing… a headscarf. Its a cross from a square headscarf and a durag. Once my hair grew all back, I tossed them away and now I want to accessorize my head when i’m having a bad hair day or simply don’t want to deal with it.

#16: Solange Blazer

I love the vikisews patterns because they come with the most detailed instructions and you know you are getting the professional insights and education to create tailored clothing the right way! This blazer has been something i’ve been wanting to create, and right before I moved to KS, I began creating a twill but never got back to, so this year I will find my pieces back and complete the project! I had purchased suiting fabric from a local fabric store in San Jose in a beautiful pink gingham color and I can’t wait to see it come to life.

#17: Clyde Jumpsuit

This is a beautiful pattern and one that I gravitate towards since you don’t have to worry about putting an outfit together since it is one piece! I have made 2 versions of this pattern and unfortunately my first one shrunk (recognize a pattern) and the second one is too loose for my liking so I never tend to wear it, but this time I will create a twill, make the alterations to ensure proper fit and leave extra fabric available in case of shrinkage.

#18: Yanta Overalls

This is another pattern I love to make and have made 3 versions of, as well. The bad news again is that the first one shrunk around the crotch area so it’s uncomfortable to sit, the second one was made out of a fabric that stretches out as one wears it, so by the end of the day the piece has lost its definition and looks more floppy then defined, and the third one, was used for when I worked at Tesla and inevitably ended up with stains and is now just for odd end jobs. But fourth time’s the charm and this I will aim to make it perfect, with some extra details!

#20: McCalls R11040

Once again, I have sewn this pattern twice now, and each time it gets better but I know I can make it the best! My most recent make was for a magazine conference for my school and I made it from a beautiful, off-white satin fabric. The only issue was that I forgot to make a bust adjustment, since I have a small chest, so the top would cave in and puff out when bending. This time I will change the bust and adjust the waist to allow for more breathing room! This makes such a beautiful outfit for any type of special occasion and can also be dressed down if made with a more casual fabric like denim, cotton, or linen.

#1: The Collage Jacket

I’ve always loved the idea of collages, but never really had the “courage” to let myself experiment. Although this pattern states it’s for a jacket, I want to use the directions and just create a collage of fabric to use for my office as a decoration piece. We have recently purchased a home and I now have my own sewing room to decorate and I believe a personal piece like this could send it in the right direction! I’m very much excited for this and will begin collecting ideas and fabrics for this project throughout the year, as well as documenting it.

#2: Bears in the Kitchen

I found a Teddy bear book at my local thrift store, and was very much intrigued. Come to find out this was a step-by-step guide on how to make the famous Teddy Roosevelt teddy bear. Even more surprisingly, it comes with more projects inside, like this bear box bag, which i would love to create for funsies, and even has “bear” dessert recipes to make (if I make them, I will be sure to document them).

#3: Double Collar Upcycling Pattern

Just because I will be following patterns this year, doesn’t mean I can’t add any pazazz. This double collar pattern is a great way for me to use left-over fabric and add an extra uncommon detail to my shirts!

#4: halloween costumes

Every year I aim to create costumes for Jordan and I, and every year I fail to do so. This year I am planning early and Jordan has agreed to be a pumpkin, while I choose to be grapes! wish me luck on this one, not sure where we will go but I know we’ll look our best!

Although sewing is the end goal for this year’s plan, I want to incorporate other goals within it. When I began sewing, I knew I wanted my clothing to have a proper fit, and that goal still remains. Since I will not be worrying about creating the patterns myself, I want to take the extra time and effort to ensure the clothing is as perfect as it can be when it comes to fit.

The other aspect of sewing I have struggled with since the beginning was tapping into my creativity. I want to explore with different sewing techniques, tools, and added details like lace, embroidery, fabric dye, paint, beads, and much more.

Now that I have outlined this plan and can invision my journey, I am beyond excited to see what comes of this year. I am also very hopeful that with this plan, I will be more consistent with updating this blog and creating a community where I can connect with like-minded individuals that share my passion! 2024 here I come!!!
